Carlos Lemos Jr., affectionately known as “Escorrega”—a name given to him in childhood Judo classes because of his slippery ground game—is a figure of inspiration in the global martial arts community. A black belt under Master Carlos Gracie Jr., Carlos is not only a World Champion in BJJ (1999 Purple Belt, 2002 Black Belt) but also a revered teacher, coach, and ambassador for the art.
With deep roots in the Gracie Barra organization, he played a pivotal role in spreading Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout Europe, helping establish franchises that still thrive today. His approach to teaching blends technical precision, respect for tradition, and a relentless passion for personal development.

Prof. Carlos Lemos Jr. Biography
A Journey from Rio to the World Stage
Born in Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Lemos Jr. began martial arts at age 3 with Tae Kwon Do, later excelling in Judo and surfing. His introduction to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at 14 was sparked by personal rivalry but quickly evolved into a lifelong passion. Trained by icons like Roberto “Gordo,” Alexandre “Soca” Carneiro, and Renzo Gracie, he earned his blue belt from Gordo and later trained under Master Carlos Gracie Jr., progressing to black belt.
Lemos made his mark in 2002 as a Black Belt World Champion and released his instructional series “Legends of Gracie Barra.” In 2004, he led the expansion of Gracie Barra in Europe, graduating numerous BJJ practitioners. Later, he moved to Chicago and returned to competition, also debuting in MMA in 2011.
His journey—from early martial arts in Brazil to international influence in Europe and the U.S.—reflects his passion, discipline, and commitment to spreading the values of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
